How to Load a Tilt Trailer

How to Load a Tilt Trailer thumbnail
Tilt trailers ease the process of loading a motorcycle.

The pivoting motion of a tilt trailer reduces the difficulty and complexity of loading small vehicles for towing. A pivot point sitting midway between the front and rear of the trailer provides the trailer with the ability to pivot. A locking pin holds the trailer in place after it is loaded and is being towed. Incorrectly loading a tilt trailer can cause significant damage to the trailer, its load or the person on the loaded vehicle.

Instructions

    • 1

Lock the tongue of the tilt trailer to a tow vehicle. Set the tow vehicle's parking brake.

    • 2

Pull the locking pin -- located on the front latch of the tilt trailer -- away from the trailer's center while pushing the top of the tilt trailer toward the ground. Release the pressure from the trailer to allow the back of the trailer to slowly lower to the ground.

    • 3

Push or drive the equipment up the tilted trailer. Continue moving forward until the trailer pivots toward the tow vehicle and you hear the locking pin click to the "lock" position.

    • 4

Push the locking pin into its full lock position if it did not set when the trailer bed pivoted onto the trailer tongue.
