How to Write an Excellent Bibliography

How to Write an Excellent Bibliography thumbnail
A bibliography is always sorted alphabetically by author.

A bibliography is a properly cited list of resources used to get information for a report, research paper, article, essay or other published work. As you work on your report, you should keep a list of each book and article you use, citing the name of the author, the title of the book or publication, the title of the article, the name of the publisher (if it's a book) and the date of publication. Record the pages you referenced in your work. Check with your professor before working on a bibliography and make sure it is in the correct style. There are several different styles of bibliography commonly used.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-space each entry in your bibliography to keep the entries separate and clear.

    • 2

Enter the author of each book, article or first person interview with their last name first followed by the title of book or the title of the article. Book titles are underlined and article titles are put in quotations. For example: Dahl, Roald. The BFG (The BFG is underlined).

    • 3

Follow each entry for a book with a period and each entry for articles with a comma.

    • 4

Enter the city of the publisher followed by the name of the publisher and the date of publication for a book. For example: Dahl, Roald. The BFG (underlined). New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1982.

    • 5

Enter the name of the magazine, its volume number and publication date in parenthesis as well as the page numbers on which the article is found for a magazine, newspaper or other publication. When using a newspaper the section of the paper is also referred to. For example: Powers, Ann, "New Tune for the Material Girl." The New York Times (underlined), New York, NY. (3/1/98): Atlantic Region, Section 2, p. 34.

List each source used in alphabetical order regardless of the type of source.
