The Best Way to Learn Math Facts
Learning math facts is an important skill because it lays the foundation for future math operations. Make sure you have a concrete understanding of each operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) before trying to memorize the facts. Keep it simple by learning one operation at a time. Once you have mastered addition, move to subtraction, then to multiplication and finally, to division. The best way to learn the facts will depend on your individual learning style. Do you prefer hands-on activities? Are you motivated by learning games? Can you memorize facts easily? Try some different activities to see which ones suit you best.

1
Test yourself to see which facts you already know automatically. Obtain a pile of flashcards with the facts on the front and the answers hidden on the back. Look at each fact, say the answer and then flip it over to check. Make two piles, one for those answered correctly and one for those answered incorrectly. If you have to pause for more than a second or two or if you say the wrong answer, it is incorrect. Another way to check which facts you already know is to take a written test. Fill in the answers, then go back to check with a calculator or get an adult's help.

2
Focus on learning three or four new facts each day. Write the facts on a piece of paper while saying them out loud or in your head, then repeat them over and over throughout the day. Close your eyes and visualize the facts in your head, seeing and saying the facts to yourself or out loud. Sing the facts in your head to the tune of a familiar song. Test yourself with flashcards when you think you know the new facts. Once you can quickly answer them, put them in the "correct" or "known" pile and wait a day or so to retest yourself.

3
Continue introducing new facts while reviewing old facts. Use flashcards, written tests or games to review facts.
-
4
Set goals by determining how many or which facts you want to learn by a certain date. Be realistic. If you can easily learn three or four facts a day, up it to five. If you are struggling with learning one new fact a day, then stick with that.

5
Celebrate your successes by rewarding yourself when you reach your goals.
