How to Calculate Savings With Energy Star Appliances
Energy Star is a standard for energy efficiency in consumer products started by the United States government. Appliances that meet these government-established standards receive the Energy Star label. Energy Star appliances reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants through efficient use of energy. While Energy Star appliances typically cost a bit more than non-certified appliances, Energy Star appliances offer lifetime savings through lower electricity bills. Open a web browser on your computer and go to the "Find Energy Star products" tool.

Select the type of Energy Star appliance that you want to calculate savings for.

Click the "Savings Calculator" link located on the left side of the appliance page in the "Resources" subsection.

Enter your estimated electricity kilowatt-hour cost in the gray "Electricty Rate ($/kWh) box. You can normally find this information on your electricity bill.

Enter the cost of the Energy Star appliance in the gray "Initial cost per unit" box.

Enter the volume of the Energy Star appliance in the gray "Volume" box.

Find the average annual savings and lifetime savings for the Energy Star appliance in the green "Annual and Life Cycle Costs and Savings" box. The estimated savings figures automatically populate based on the information you entered in the gray boxes.
