How to Make a Shop Vacuum Quieter

How to Make a Shop Vacuum Quieter thumbnail
A shop vacuum is ideal for cleaning up sawdust and other woodworking debris.

A shop vacuum is a heavy-duty vacuum cleaner capable of cleaning up the debris, dust and dirt left behind from home improvement projects. Usually able to clean both wet and dry messes, a shop vacuum can be very loud regardless of whether it uses a bag or canister filtration system. A shop vacuum that is very noisy may have another problem you need to investigate before using it further. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Empty out the vacuum canister or replace the bag. Because a shop vacuum is made to do major clean up, if it is full of dirt and debris, its performance will decrease causing it to sound louder than normal.

    • 2

Clean or replace the filters. Once the filters get very dirty, the vacuum has a harder time pulling air through it, causing it to get noisier.

    • 3

Check all of the connections and tighten where necessary. Sometimes if a hose or filter comes loose, the vacuum will not only work ineffectively, but will also become louder.

    • 4

Look inside the hoses and make sure there are no obstructions. Something stuck in one of the hoses can force the shop vacuum to work harder and thus sound louder.
