How to Do Math Problems Quickly
Strategic practice can dramatically improve math problem solving speeds. Simple problems that involve only one mathematical procedure can be drilled to the point of memorization and near instant recollection. More complex math problems may include several procedures. Multi-step math problems often cause confusion that may lead to incorrect answers and time loss. A compound math problem can be translated into more basic steps to eliminate many opportunities for error. Repetition and comprehension combine to speed math problem solving.

- 8½ x 11 in card stock paper (100 lb paperweight)
- Permanent markers

Time yourself with a stopwatch as you complete a series of 10 math problems. Check the answers with a calculator or answer key. Score the assessment quiz with a time and the number of incorrect answers.

Dissect the math problem into the various mathematical procedures necessary to reach an answer. Multiplication, division, subtraction, addition and the application of a formula may be necessary to solve a single multi-step problem.

Make 10 marks one inch apart along both 11-inch long sides of the card stock. Connect the marks with straight lines using a permanent marker. Draw four parallel lines two inches apart that start at one 8½-inch edge to the other.

Cut along the lines to form small flashcards from the card stock. Divide the flashcards up so there are an equal number of blank cards for each of the procedures involved in the math problem. Write a single step math procedure like division or multiplication on one side of the flashcard and the answer on the other.

Shuffle the flashcards with all the answers sides facing away. Drill yourself on the basic mathematic components from the larger problem. Ask a friend to test you with the flashcards once you know the answers well.

Return to the compound math problems once you have memorized the answers on the flashcards. Break each problem down into the individual steps and apply the memorized answers to move quickly toward an answer. Check your answers with a calculator before moving on.
