Yard lights can add a new visual dimension to a home and extend the usefulness of a yard after the sun goes down. Of the different types of yard lights available on the market, solar lighting has gained popularity through the years with homeowners. The process required to successfully install solar yard lighting requires solar-powered lights and an understanding as to the proper positioning of the lights for best results. Determine the location in which the solar yard lights should be installed. Select installation locations that will allow the solar panels on the lights to receive at least eight to 10 hours of sunshine a day for best results.

Purchase solar yard lights based on your outdoor lighting needs. Select stake-in lights that can be positioned around the yard or consider hanging solar lights that can illuminate a larger area by being elevated.

Push the stake end of the solar yard light into the ground in the desired location. Place the riser tube of the solar light onto the stake. Place a torpedo level on the side of the tube to check if it is vertically straight. Adjust the light if needed.

Position hanging solar yard lights on tree limbs, posts or other areas based on personal preference and lighting needs.

Monitor the solar yard lights for a few days and observe their operation. Move the solar lights to adjust their position to the sun so that they receive maximum exposure to sunlight during the day.
