How to Use PJ1 Black Wrinkle Paint on a Motor
PJ1 black wrinkle paint is a specialist paint coating, primarily designed for motorbikes, that creates a wrinkled surface. The paint surface area increases because of the wrinkles and provides faster heat dissipation from a hot engine. PJ1 advises that the black wrinkle paint will withstand temperatures up to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. It is suitable for any motor with a surface running temperature not exceeding the paint limit. The specialized coating consists of layers that dry differentially and this creates the textured paint effect. It is important to follow the preparation procedure to optimize the correct adhesion of PJ1 black wrinkle paint over the long term.
Things You'll Need
- Mineral spirits
- Cloths
- 80-grit sandpaper
- Atmospheric thermometer
- Masking tape
- Respirator
- Safety goggles
Instructions

1
Wipe the motor that you want to paint using mineral spirits and a cloth to remove dirt and oil. Use 80-grit sandpaper to remove all surface rust. Rub gloss surfaces with the sandpaper, and wipe up the sanding dust.
-
2
Place the can of PJ1 black wrinkle paint in close proximity to the motor. Place an atmospheric thermometer between the motor and the paint can. Check that the thermometer reads between 70 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit for the paint to work successfully.

3
Mask all components that you don't want painted, using masking tape and cloths. Mask all rubber tubing, screws and seals that you need to access regularly.
-
4
Shake the PJ1 black wrinkle paint can until you hear the rattling ball, and then aggressively shake the can for one minute. Spray an inconspicuous test area on the motor to ensure the paint is compatible with the engine and that you like the effect.
-
5
Spray with the can upright and from 12 to 16 inches away from the motor. Spray in a series of horizontal stripes across the surface. Spray the second coat in a series of vertical stripes across the painted surface. Repeat the step for an additional two coats.
-
6
Upend the can and press the spray nozzle until the paint stops flowing, as soon as you finish applying the last coat or the nozzle will clog. Leave the wrinkle paint to dry for 4 hours before removing the masking tape. Let the paint cure for 72 hours before using the motor at full running temperature in order to maintain successful paint adhesion.

Tips & Warnings
Leave the motor and the paint can in the required ambient temperature for at least half an hour to ensure both the can and motor are within the paint application temperature range.
Use a heat bulb in a clamping light fitting to increase the ambient temperature.
Spray in light coats for tight wrinkles and heavy coats for large wrinkles.
Use a respirator and safety goggles when spraying the paint to avoid chemical ingestion.
Apply all coats within 30 minutes or the paint may peel.
