How to Convert UTM Coordinates to Latitude

The Universal Transverse Mercator, or UTM, system is a global grid of coordinates developed by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency. The grid, made up of 60 zones, was developed for military use. But if your navigation hardware or software is incompatible with the UTM format, you'll need a UTM to geographic utility to convert your UTM coordinates into standard longitude and latitude formatting.

Instructions

  1. UTM to Geodetic

    • 1

Open a Web browser, and navigate to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's UTM to Geodetic converter (see Resources) to derive latitude data from your UTM coordinates.

    • 2

Enter northing and easting of your UTM coordinates into their respective "Northing" and "Easting" fields in the utility. Enter the zone into the "Zone" field.

    • 3

Specify what hemisphere your UTM coordinates belong in -- click either the "Northern Hemisphere" or "Southern Hemisphere" box. Click "Submit" to convert the coordinates into longitude and latitude format.

    Geographic/UTM Coordinate Converter

    • 4

Open a Web browser, and navigate to Hiwaay's Geographic/UTM Coordinate Converter tool (see Resources) to convert your UTM coordinates into latitude.

    • 5

Enter your UTM coordinates into the utility's "x (easting)" and "y (northing)" fields. Enter your coordinate's zone into the utility's "Zone" field.

    • 6

Select the hemisphere of your UTM coordinate. Select "N" for the northern hemisphere and "S" for the southern. Click "<<" to convert your coordinates -- check the "lat" box for the converted latitude.

UTM to Latitude and Longitude Converter

    • 7

Open a Web browser, and navigate to the Engineering Toolbox's UTM to Latitude and Longitude Converter (see Resources) to get latitude data out of your UTM coordinates.

    • 8

Enter the easting and northing of your UTM coordinates into the utility's "East" and "North" fields.

    • 9

Enter the zone, or the UTM coordinates, into the "Zone" field. The converted latitude will appear below the "Zone" box.
