How to Save Money on a College Campus
Many college students learn the hard way just how much freedom costs. According to The Huffington Post, average tuition at a four-year private college cost $35,000 during the 2007/2008 school year. Attending a four-year public college cost students about $14,000. Those figures can be overwhelming enough without factoring in the cost of living, either on or off campus. Save money by taking advantage of your student status, even if you have a steady income from a full or part-time job.

1
Utilize campus cafeterias by getting a meal plan. Pay a flat rate at the beginning of each semester for a meal plan. Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner in the school's cafeteria. Save fast food and dining out for special occasions.
-
2
Take advantage of free services. Use campus computers instead of purchasing your own laptop. Check DVDs out of the campus library instead of paying for rentals at a store. Research campus offerings before paying for a service, like computer repair; your school may provide it free to students.

Stay out of bars, where you can easily spend $50 in a night. Keep your eyes open for free entertainment instead. Use the university's gym to work out or play basketball, volleyball or other sports, or join a club that meets on the weekends.

Carry your student ID card with you at all times. According to Alysse Dalessandro of Wallet Pop, "That little plastic card is your ticket to savings." Businesses ranging from restaurants to retail stores to entertainment venues like movie theaters, bowling alleys and skating rinks often give discounts to students.
