How to Use Makeup Bags for Candles

How to Use Makeup Bags for Candles thumbnail
Breathe new life into an old makeup bag with an illuminary project.

You can do more with old makeup bags than throw them in the trash or gift them to your pre-teen daughter and her friends. Transform tired, old makeup bags into festive luminaries that you can use to decorate your lawn and home with. Make a slight detour from the traditional luminaries, which are generally made from simple paper bags and filled with votive candles, by using old makeup bags that are translucent or clear as your luminary base.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather old translucent or clear makeup bags that you no longer use. Select bags that are made of different colors or hues and which are at least six inches in width and five to six inches in height.

    • 2

Cut off the top zippered portion of the makeup bag with a pair of scissors or a utility knife. Fill the bottom of the bag with enough sand to keep it from tipping over or blowing over in the wind.

    • 3

Clear away the sand from a small portion in the middle of the bag and place a 2 by 2-inch square of aluminum foil in the center of the bag. Set a votive candle inside of a clear glass votive holder and place the holder with candle in the middle of the aluminum foil.

    • 4

Set the makeup bag luminary in a desired spot away from curtains, drapes and other flammable materials. Light the votive candle at night or in a darkened room and enjoy the refracted light as it bounces off the makeup bag design and onto your walls, or if outside, into the nighttime air.
