1
Wait until the mid-summer, which is when most of the existing crabgrass seeds are growing. However, do not wait until the plants develop feathery seed heads, since these will produce more plants.
-
2
Water the soil to a 3-inch depth with a garden hose just prior to pulling the crabgrass. This makes it easier to pull the entire root system out of the ground.

3
Put on gardening gloves and locate a clump of crabgrass on the lawn. Lift up the blades until you can easily see where it grows from the ground.
-
4
Insert a v-shaped weeding tool into the soil next to the clump of crabgrass and dig down to cut through the roots. Pull up on the tool to lift the clump out of the ground.
-
5
Open a trash bag and immediately place the clump of crabgrass inside. Be careful not to disturb any seeds that are already present on the blades.
-
6
Repeat the process to pull up any remaining crabgrass clumps from the lawn. When you are done, tie up the trash bag and dispose of it.
