How to Wash Heater Blankets

Electric heater blankets are a great addition to your bedding during the winter. The heater blanket plugs into a wall outlet and has a heating element built into the blanket to provide continuous warmth. Like all bedding linens, your heater blanket must be washed on a regular basis. Although the blanket has electrical components, it is designed to be washed using water, either in a washing machine or by hand. After washing the heater blanket, you can then use your dryer on a low setting to decrease the dry time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power cord from the wall prior to cleaning.

    • 2

Examine the entire heater blanket to ensure that there are no tears or rips where wires have come through the material. If wires are exposed, discard the blanket.

    • 3

Pre-soak the heater blanket in a mixture of mild soap and warm water. Allow the heater blanket to sit for at least 15 minutes.

    • 4

Place the heater blanket in your washing machine and wash it on the "delicate" or "gentle" setting, if you would like to wash the heater blanket in your washing machine.

    • 5

Wring out the heater blanket several times to remove the soapy water if hand washing. After the heater blanket has been wrung out, rinse it in clean water and then wring out until the water is removed.

    • 6

Pre-heat the dryer using a low temperature for two minutes and then place the heater blanket into the dryer. Tumble dry on low for 10 minutes and then remove.

    • 7

Stretch the heater blanket out to its original size to prevent shrinking.

    • 8

Hang the heater blanket over a clothesline or shower rod and allow it to dry completely.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not dry clean your electric blank as the chemicals used could damage the internal wiring.

  • Do not plug the blanket back into the wall outlet until it is completely dry.
