How to Install a Fluid Master for a Toilet Tank
Fluidmaster produces a number of fixtures for use in household plumbing. One of these is a Fluidmaster fill valve for your toilet. Fill valves connect to your home's water supply and refill the tank after a flush. A float connected to the fill valve responds to the water level and shuts off the water after it reaches a certain height inside the tank. Installing a Fluidmaster for a toilet tank can be done by the home DIYer over the course of an afternoon. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Clean out the bottom of the toilet tank with a standard bathroom cleaner and rag. Don't use anything too harsh that might scratch the tank. Pay special attention to the area around the fill valve opening in the bottom of the tank. Cleaning the fill socket will help the fill valve seal better and prevent leaks.
-
2
Turn the Fluidmaster upside down. Apply a thin coat of silicone grease to the rubber stopper located at the base of the valve.
-
-
3
Turn the Fluidmaster right side up. Insert it into the tank so that the threads on the bottom poke out through the hole in the base of the tank. Hold the Fluidmaster in position with one hand.
-
4
Take your other hand and use it to thread the plastic retention nut on the threads at the bottom of the Fluidmaster that stick out from the bottom of the tank.
-
5
Connect the over flow hose at the top of the Fluidmaster to the top of the hollow overflow tube in the center of the tank. There should be a clip included with the Fluidmaster to allow you to clip the hose to the top of the tube.
-
6
Wrap the inlet on the underside of the Fluidmaster with plumber's tape. Also wrap the supply valve outlet, located either on the wall or the floor next to the toilet, with plumbers tape. Connect one end of a water hose to the supply valve and the other to the inlet on the underside of the tank. Tighen with the adjustable wrench.
-
7
Turn the knob on the water supply valve counterclockwise. Watch the Fluidmaster as it fills the toilet and check for leaks. Tighten any couplings or nuts, if needed.

Tips & Warnings
When installing a fluid master for a toilet tank, try to purchase one that comes with an integrated float valve, as these are simpler to adjust than the ball float types.
