Instructions

    • 1

Chose a species of aquatic plant that you want to grow. Take into consideration the location where you will grow your aquatic plants and the size of the aquarium that will house the plants as they grow.

    • 2

Plant seeds or seedlings into a substrate, if the species of plant that you chose requires a substrate. Some aquatic plants are free-floating, which means they will attach themselves to a rock or piece of wood. If your plant requires a substrate, chose one with particles no larger than 3 millimeters.

    • 3

Place your aquarium in a location that receives a good deal of sunshine. Try to mimic the conditions that the aquatic plant species is used to in nature. For example, if you are growing a tropical plant that is used to receiving 14 hours of sunlight per day, place your aquarium in a sunny location in your home where it will receive maximum light.

    • 4

Install a fluorescent light on the top of the aquarium or next to the aquarium. There are many different florescent aquarium lights on the market, just make sure whatever you purchase matches the size of the aquarium or will sufficiently shine into the aquarium. Ideally, aquatic plants need between 0.5 and 1.0 watts of fluorescent light per liter of water in the tank. In addition to natural sunlight, leave the florescent light on up to 14 hours a day.

    • 5

Fertilize your aquatic plants every month with a well-balanced fertilizer that is specifically designed for aquatic plants.

    • 6

Sell your aquatic plants to consumers directly or on consignment with a local aquarium store. There are many options to sell your aquatic plants. Try listing your plants on an online marketplace, such as AgriSeek, which is a specialized online market for agricultural goods. You can also try selling your plants at your local farmer's markets. Depending on the quality and quantity of your plants, contact an aquatic plant or flower dealer in your area. They may put the plants on consignment for you, which means that they will sell your plants for you and split the profits from the sale with you.
