How to Make a Fade-Away Shot in Basketball

Create space between you and your defender by leaning away from the basket.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use this shot against tight defensive pressure. If your defender has been effectively keeping you away from the basket, this move will get her or him to re-evaluate defensive tactics.

  2. Step 2

Stand sideways with your shooting hand closest to the basket so that both shoulders are in line with the basket.

  3. Step 3

Keep the ball away from prying defensive hands.

  4. Step 4

Drop your shooting shoulder down and toward your opponent. This simple move may make your defender think you're driving to the hoop.

  5. Step 5

Take a step away from the defender and the basket with your back foot - opposite of your shooting hand.

  6. Step 6

Open your shoulders so that they are square to the basket as you take a step backward.

  7. Step 7

Shoot the ball off your back foot, leaning away from the basket with your other foot off the ground.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try using this move on the baseline. You can fade out of bounds or backwards or any variation of the two.
  • This is a set shot, not a jump shot. You just happen to be on one foot instead of two.
  • Put some extra arch on the ball since you're shooting over somebody and falling away.
  • Once you've successfully made a fade-away shot over a defender, fake the move the next time. As your defender leaps toward you, make a move to the basket.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.

on 8/8/2006 On a fast break:
While running, stop and get into shooting position. Jump back with your opposite foot, and shoot with full power. Otherwise, you will air ball.

When posted up:
Fake forward. This will make your defender step back. Jump back, shoot with full power, and do a basic fade.

My signature move:
Fake forward. Go between their legs, and then off their head. While they are stunned, jump back and shoot the fade.

on 3/29/2006 Drive toward the basket, stop on a dime with a crossover. Good look at the basket! I averaged 20 points a game in High school just with this move.

on 11/22/2005 Dribble with your strongest hand to one side, then as your opponent comes near you do a crossover dribble; the franchise crossover. Go one way then bring the ball back, now take a good look at the goal, and jump back taking the fade away.

on 11/22/2005 As you are approaching a defender, turn around so that your back is up against him. If you are on the right side of the goal, you will leave your left foot down and then pivot. Pivot to the left and fake him off, act like you are going to shoot the ball. Then pivot to the right (still leaving your left foot down) and shoot the ball.

on 11/22/2005 Start to back your man down, and after you back him down a little, with your back still facing him, fake left (assuming you're right handed) and then turn around to your right (which should leave you open if you did the fake correctly) and shoot the ball.

If you're left handed, then just fake right, and then turn to the left and shoot.
