How to Apply Bulk Window Tinting

How to Apply Bulk Window Tinting thumbnail
Laws governing window tinting on cars vary from state to state.

Window tint is used to darken the color of the window. Window tint can be purchased in bulk to apply on multiple cars. Bulk window tint comes in various shades from 5 percent to 60 percent. All shades of window tint will reflect the suns harmful UV rays, and reduce the temperature inside the vehicle. Always check your local laws for the percentage of tint that is allowed in your state, as this varies.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the window thoroughly with the soap and water.

    • 2

Scrape the window with a sharp razor blade to remove any debris that may be stuck to the glass. Start at the top of the window and scrape across, in a horizontal direction. Work from the top to the bottom.

    • 3

Remove the remaining water or glass cleaner from the window using a squeegee.

    • 4

Spray the window with the soap and water solution. Ensure that every area of the window is wet with the solution.

    • 5

Remove the protective liner from the back of the tint.

    • 6

Place the adhesive side of the window tint film over the window. The soap and water solution will cause the tint to stick to the window.

    • 7

Maneuver the tint into place leaving 1/8-inch overlapping the window. Roll the window down -- to expose the edge of the glass -- if the top is hidden by the door frame.

    • 8

Squeegee the tint to remove most of the air bubbles between the glass and the tint. Not all bubbles will be removed.

    • 9

Cut the tint along the edge of the glass using a utility knife.

    • 10

Cut the corners of the tint into a rounded shape. This will prevent the tint from peeling.

    • 11

Slide the film above the window approximately ¼ of an inch.

    • 12

Position the base of the tint, so that it rests just above the trim on the window track.

    • 13

Squeegee the tint to the window. This is now the permanent position of the bulk window tint. Ensure that most of the air bubbles are removed.

    • 14

Hover a heat gun over the areas on the window tint where there are bubbles that you could not remove with the squeegee. Slide a Teflon card over the bubbles. A hairdryer may be substituted, although that will prolong the process. Repeat this step as necessary. Ensure that the bulk window tint is smooth on the surface of the window.

    • 15

Cut the edges of the window tint as needed -- rounding all corners.
