How to Prepare for 4th Grade Reading TAKS

The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test is administered to all students as part of the No Child Left Behind Act. To be promoted to the next grade, students in third, fifth and eighth grade must pass the test within guidelines in reading and math skills. Additional portions of the test are knowledge tests in social studies and science. The knowledge portions can be studied and memorized as part of class work, but the skills portions will take a little more work.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your practice test, and examine the titles in the reading portion. Decide which seem the hardest or most boring. If you start with these first, the rest of the passages will be easier to work through.

    • 2

Highlight the title of your first passage, and then select the subheadings, underlined words, pictures, captions and diagrams.

    • 3

Divide the TAKS test passage into sections, with a line between every few paragraphs or sentences. Smaller sections will help you keep focus as you work through the text.

    • 4

Turn to the comprehension questions at the end of the passage, and underline or mark key words. For the fourth grade test, the reading portion has a double passage, where you will read the first passage and answer the questions, then the second passage.

    • 5

Read the first section of the first passage, underlining or highlighting words that correspond to the questions. Once you get to the end of the section, turn to the questions and answer what you can. Repeat the process until you have completed the passages.

    • 6

Proofread your answers against the passages, making certain the text supports your response. After you have completed both passages and questions for the fourth grade test, double check to make certain you answered all questions.

Tips & Warnings

  • The TAKS test is multiple-choice bubbles. To eliminate missed answers, write the letter of the correct answer next to the question, and only fill in the bubble when you are certain the answer is correct. Make certain to fill in all answers before turning in the test sheet.
