1
Assess the space. Measure the room to determine the square footage. Draw a floor plan. Be sure to make note of door and window placement and any architectural features, like columns or a fireplace.
-
2
Determine how you will use the bathroom suite. If this is a remodel rather than a new bathroom, take a few days to observe how you use your existing bathroom and write down what you want to change.

3
Identify your decorating style. Does your taste run to country or Victorian, or do your prefer sleek, contemporary decor? Peruse decorating books and magazines and bookmark the bathroom suites that most draw your eye.
-
4
Install an under-the-floor heating system to keep your feet toasty warm even on tile. For a contemporary bathroom suite, look into granite or marble tile for the floor. Ceramic tile is also a good choice and more budget friendly. Go for subway tile or octagonal tiles of black and white for a Victorian-themed space. Opt for wood or laminate floors to ground a bath with country style.
-
5
Decide on a bathtub to fit your decor. Select a slick, modern soaker tub, or opt for a vintage claw-foot model. Relax your muscles with a whirlpool tub. Place the tub in front of a window to take advantage of the view. Leave the window undressed if privacy isn't an issue. Highlight architectural details. Position the tub close to the fireplace; install it in a nook.
-
6
Pick your sink. Vessel sinks come in a wide variety of materials and shapes. Mount them on a counter or contemporary vanity for a modern look. Choose a pedestal or wall-mount style for a vintage bathroom. Install a self-rimming sink, one that has a lip that rests on the vanity top, in an antique dresser or wash stand retrofitted as a vanity for a country look. Decide on double sinks if you share the bathroom suite with another person.
-
7
Select your shower. Give yourself a spa experience with a large walk-in shower with multiple shower heads, or opt for a steam shower. Choose glass tiles for the shower enclosure, or for a more Zen feel, go with natural stone.
-
8
Plan the toilet area. Place the toilet in its own room or partition it off from the rest of the suite. Choose a water-saver model. Add European flair with a bidet.
-
9
Illuminate the bathroom suite with a variety of lighting. Let in natural light with windows and skylights. Hang a chandelier over the tub for a touch of romance. Install vanity lights around makeup mirrors. Put in wall sconces on either side of the sink. Use can lighting for overall illumination. Put in dimmer switches to raise or lower the brightness of the lighting.
