How to Register for TOEFL

How to Register for TOEFL thumbnail
Most candidates take the Internet-based version of TOEFL.

Each year, about 1 million people take TOEFL, or Test of English as a Foreign Language, in test centers worldwide. Colleges and organizations in more than 130 countries accept TOEFL as a measure of English-language skills. Start your registration by going to ETS.org and clicking on "TOEFL Test." From there, click on "Test Centers and Dates" to find a center and date that suit you. You can take TOEFL only in one of these centers, each of which offers either the Internet version or the paper-based version. The most common ways to register are online and by mail.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to ETS.org/toefl. Click "Register for the Test" and "Register Online" to register online for the Internet-based test. To register online for the paper-based version, first click on "paper-based test" and check whether that test is available in your region. In the United States, for example, some states' test centers offer only the Internet-based test.

    • 2

Go to ETS.org/toefl. Click "Register for the Test" and scroll down to "Register by Mail" for the Internet-based test, or iBT. Download the registration form and and fill it out. Mail your registration to the iBT registration office if you are in the United States, U.S. territories or Canada, or to your regional registration center in other countries. Check the form for mailing address and registration deadline. To register by mail for the paper-based test, check that it is available in your region and download the form from ets.org/toefl/pbt.

    • 3

Review the downloaded iBT registration form and call 800-468-6335 or 443-751-4862 to register by phone if you live in the United States, U.S. territories or Canada. Check the iBT registration web page for contact details in other parts of the world. You cannot register by phone for the paper-based test.

Tips & Warnings

  • Register for your preferred date as early as possible because seats for the test can get booked fast.

  • If you have a disability or health-related need requiring any special arrangement, contact ETS Disability Services in advance. Its "Bulletin Supplement for Test-Takers with Disabilities or Health-Related Needs" gives details. Or go to ETS.org/disabilities.
