Motion detector light switches feature a sensor on the front of the light switch panel that is used to detect movement in a room. The switch can be set to different sensitivity and features a time control setting to determine the length of time the light will remain on once activated. Installing a motion detector light switch involves the removal of an existing switch with a few basic tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

      Access the circuit breaker panel for the home. Find the circuit breaker that controls power to the room and light switch on which you will be working. Flip the breaker "off" to disrupt power to the light switch.

      Return to the light switch. Flip the light switch on and off to determine if power has been disrupted.

      Loosen and remove the small screws holding the light switch plate in place with a flat screwdriver. Pull the light switch plate from the switch.

      Remove the screws used to attach the light switch to the wall box. Pull the switch from the box to expose the wires connected to the back of the switch.

      Loosen the contacts holding the positive (white) and negative (black) wires in place. Use the flat screwdriver to loosen and remove the wires from the switch.

      Hold the motion detector switch and attach the positive and negative wires to the terminals on the back of the new switch. Make sure to connect the wires to the correct terminals for proper operation.

      Attach the motion detector switch to the wall box with screws and a screwdriver. Place the supplied switch plate over the motion detector switch and secure with the included screws and a screwdriver.
