How to Teach Creation and Evolution in Schools
Teaching creationism and the theory of evolution in schools has proved to be a minefield in the recent history of education in the U.S. Some test cases have gone to the courts and this has resulted in a degree of clarity. Many teachers and parents do not see a contradiction between religious belief and scientific theories. But there are parents and some teachers who do see a problem. The theory of evolution argues that man is a result of the survival of the fittest, and that people have evolved to the present human form. Fundamentalist Christians in particular find this heretical to their belief in the Book of Genesis and the descent of mankind from Adam and Eve.

1
Teach the theory of evolution in science classes. The courts have ruled that science textbooks should not have stickers attached stating that the theory of evolution is merely one belief system, as some parents argued. The First Amendment of the U.S.Constitution states that no one religion is superior to another and that any religion is not superior to no religion. Therefore, religious belief cannot dictate the nature of school lessons.

Address the book of Genesis and creationism in religious education classes. Do not teach creationism in a science class, or as a science. Teach creationism in conjunction with other religions and their belief systems. It is useful to cover this in lessons on comparative religions.

Show respect to students who find the theory of evolution difficult because they see it as contradicting what they have been brought up to believe. Do not allow other students to mock their beliefs, but do facilitate an open discussion on this topic. Be aware that not all religions have a problem teaching evolution side-by-side with religious belief.

Tips & Warnings
Because this is a contentious issue, you need to have clarity on the school's policy and its communication, and all staff needs to know what the law has decided on science and religious instruction.
