How to Do an Up-and-Under Post Move in Basketball

Goad your defender into the air with a hard fake to create room for an easy layup in the post.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Have possession of the ball with your back to the defender and the basket.

  2. Step 2

Fake a hard move to the basket - one step and one step only at the angle of your choice.

  3. Step 3

Pretend you're going to release a quick shot.

  4. Step 4

Keep your pivot foot planted and take a step to the opposite side of your defender's body from where you took your fake move or step. Limit contact with your defender to your back and rear, if possible.

  5. Step 5

Dribble the ball once, if necessary, as you go around your defender.

  6. Step 6

Jump off the foot you stepped with.

  7. Step 7

Shoot the ball quickly. Any move in the post needs to be done quickly due to crowding near the basket.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sell the move. You want your defender thinking she or he has beaten you to the spot when you offer your fake.
  • A head fake may help move your defender out of the way.
  • Cut to the basket in one smooth motion. Step, jump, shoot.
  • If you have any condition which would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.

on 11/22/2005 If you picked up your dribble and can't get a shot off over your defender, try this variation on the up-and-under move. Suppose your right foot is your pivot foot; while facing your defender, pump-fake, then quickly step around the defender with your left foot, putting your body between the ball and your opponent (much like a drop step). When your left foot hits the floor, you can push off of it for a shot or lay-up.

on 11/22/2005 Establish a fade away until the defender becomes overly aggressive in stopping it. Continue your regular motion but don't release your shot. Instead get the defender in the air and step past him for the under move. This may also lead to a foul.
