A properly working kitchen is important to the overall well-being and function of the family. Although not all food is prepared inside the oven, some foods require oven cooking. If your oven door doesn't close properly, the unit may not work at all, or at the best capability, since heat may escape. Before calling a repair person to fix your oven door, or buying a new oven altogether, troubleshoot the door yourself.
Step 1
Look for crumbs or debris inside that oven, on the inside of the door or along the gasket that may prevent the door from closing properly. Remove the debris with a damp cloth and try to close the door as normal.

Check the hinges for built-up rust or grime. Remove rust with steel wool or a sponge and soapy water. Dry thoroughly, and apply oil for easier opening and closing.
Step 3
Loosen, then tighten the hinges to the inside of the frame with a screwdriver. Loose or improperly aligned hinges may cause the door to hang wrong and not close properly. Test the tightness of the seal by placing a piece of paper at the top corner of the oven and closing the door; a properly sealed door will grip the paper tightly when you pull on it.

Check the "lock" button on self-cleaning ovens. An engaged "lock" button may prevent the door from closing.
