How to Thread a 5186 Sewing Machine
Threading a Sears Kenmore 385.18630 (5186) sewing machine can make the difference between perfectly stitching your torn clothing together and having to throw away a favorite article of clothing. With the Kenmore 5186 sewing machine you must thread the bobbin first in order to thread the sewing machine. Unplug the electrical cord for the sewing machine before threading to reduce the risk of shock. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Spool thread around the bobbin 15 times. Place the full bobbin onto the exposed spindle on the right side of the machine, and then wrap the thread from the bobbin around the threaded guide at the top of the machine.
-
2
Pull out the hand wheel of the machine, which is on the right side of the machine, and then step on the pedal to wind the bobbin. The rotation will automatically stop once the bobbin is full. Take the bobbin off the spindle once the rotation is complete.

3
Slide off the plate underneath the sewing machine needle, and then place the filled bobbin onto the newly exposed spindle. Pull out 5 to 8 inches of the thread out from the compartment, and then slide the plate back into place.
-
4
Place the spool of thread onto the top of the sewing machine and unwind 5 to 7 inches of thread from the spool. Make sure that the thread unwinds counterclockwise.
-
5
Guide the unwound thread through the threading guide on top-front of the machine. Twist it around the guide, and then bring the thread down to the guide on the left side of the machine. Wrap the thread around the dial, and then set the tension dial to 5 or 6. On a scale from 1 to 10, 5 is a medium amount of tension.
-
6
Turn the hand wheel until the needle exposes itself, and then insert the thread the needle. Turn the hand wheel until the needle has picked up the bobbin thread and the tensioned thread.
