Step-by-Step Instructions for Changing Mower Blades

Replace mower blades as part of the routine maintenance.

A lawnmower that is operating properly greatly reduces the time and effort required to cut a lawn. Maintaining a mower is an essential part of ownership and involves routine steps. You should replace blades at least once at the beginning of each mowing season and replace a worn or damaged blade at any time.

Things You'll Need

• Gloves
• Wood blocks
• Socket wrench
• Replacement mower blade

Instructions

1. Position the mower on a level surface. Pull the spark plug wire from the tip of the spark plug to prevent accidental starting.

2. Put on a pair of work gloves to protect hands while working. Locate the carburetor and air cleaner on the side of the mower engine. Tilt the mower onto its side with the carburetor and cleaner pointing up, to prevent oil from seeping in and possibly damaging the carburetor.

3. Place a block of wood against the inside of the mower deck. Turn the mower blade until it contacts the wood and wedges it in place.

4. Select a socket for the socket wrench that fits the bolt head in the center of the mower blade. Place the socket on the bolt so it is securely seated.

5. Turn the socket wrench to loosen and remove the bolt. Pull the bolt, washers and blade from the spindle in the center of the mower deck. Pay attention to the order of the blade and washers on the mounting bolt. Discard the old worn blade.

6. Obtain a replacement blade for the mower. Assemble the blade and washers on the bolt in the same order as when the old blade was removed. Thread the bolt into the spindle and hand tighten as much as possible.

7. Tighten the bolt securely using the socket wrench. Remove the block of wood and set the mower down on the ground. Connect the spark plug wire to the spark plug for operation.
