How to Learn GMAT for Math

How to Learn GMAT for Math thumbnail
Make sure you have adequate time to study before the exam.

In order to achieve a high score on the math section of the GMAT, test takers should follow a specific set of studying rules. Test-takers need to be aware that the math section is not necessarily about knowing math as much as it is about knowing math tricks or seeing through deceptive questions. For this reason, test-takers need to obtain professional test preparation materials. Free preparation resources are available in public libraries and online.

Instructions

    • 1

Take an assessment test. Find out the areas of math that you need to review or learn. Such tests can be found online, bought in a bookstore or borrowed from a library. Make sure to stay within the time limit and to take the test in a quiet room, away from distractions.

    • 2

Obtain GMAT preparation materials. These materials can be bought, borrowed from the library or even downloaded online. The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), for example, offers sample questions on its website. Focus on material that include lessons on the tricks to answering math questions fast. Speed is very important in standardized tests.

    • 3

Set time aside each day to study the math tricks. In these study sessions, try to develop or learn math strategies and stay consistent with them. Consistency will help you finish the test in time.

    • 4

Take assessment tests at regular intervals. Keep track of each test score and the sections that need more studying, which will help you measure your success studying as well as identify the material on which you should focus.

    • 5

Do not study the day before. Relax and get a good night's sleep. Studying the day before the exam will stress you and might actually cause you to forget material previously learned.
