How to Set Up a Household

Setting up a household can be a rewarding experience. You will really feel at home by bringing more family members to live with you. Yet, you may not immediately realize that you must do more than simply have relatives move in. To obtain full governmental benefits, you must register your household with the IRS in the proper manner. Luckily, you can do so readily by following some simple guidelines.

Instructions

Move everybody in. Set up a living space for new family members who are joining you. If you have a guest bedroom, simply convert it for the use of the new household members. Otherwise, you may have to add an annex to your house or share rooms.

Register the household properly with the IRS. Generally, you should not place the new members on the deed to your home. If you do so, you will no longer be able to secure a mortgage payment deduction with the IRS. If the new members will pay the mortgage, transfer title to them so they can earn the mortgage payment deduction.

Plan your family life. Decide on issues such as dinnertime, chores and vacations. Having a good set of rules in place will allow you to avoid conflicts in the future.
