Place the WaterBoss in a desired location in your home. Turn off the electricity and the water supply to the water heater. Ensure the inlet and outlet and drain connections meet the standards of the local codes. Check the arrows on the valve to ensure that the water flows in the proper direction. Do not plumb the WaterBoss in backward.

Elevate the drain line. The drain line must meet the minimum requirement of 1/2-inch to 5/8-inch tubing. You can elevate the drain line up to 8 feet as long as water pressure is more than 40 psi. If you have a drain line 25 inches or longer, increase the drain line to 5/8 inches. In addition, the end of the drain lines must be lower than a control valve, and drain line must equal in height.

Flush cold water lines. Flushing cold water lines get rids of any debris. Turn on the water supply, open up the nearest water tap and then let the water run for about two to three minutes. Turn off the water supply when the water flow is clear. Place a bypass valve in the "Service" position.

Close your faucet and check for leaks. If you find leakage, turn off the main water supply and open the nearest faucet with cold water to depressurize. Close the faucet to eliminate any siphoning. Repair the leaks. Power the electricity to the water heater and water supply. Place another bypass valve in "Service" position.

Connect an overflow line at the end of a drain. The drain must be at lower than 3 inches at the bottom of an overflow fitting.

Set the number on your WaterBoss. For municipal water, contact your local water company for your setting number. The setting number for municipal water is determined by the water hardness in grains per the gallon. For well water, complete the instructions on the test strips included with your WaterBoss.

Add water and salt to your WaterBoss. Remove all installation and packaging materials before you add salt into the WaterBoss. Add about 2 gallons of water to brine cabinet. In addition, add salt to brine cabinet and wait two hours. After two hours have elapsed, push the "recharge" button and hold it for five seconds. The WaterBoss begins a regeneration cycle. Depending on which model you have, the cycling times vary. WaterBoss 550 cycles run for 31 minutes. WaterBoss 700 cycles run for 38 minutes. After the first cycle, your WaterBoss automatically refills the correct amount of water.
