How to Replace an Under-Sink Water Filter

Under-sink water filters provide filtered drinking water routed through a separate tap at the top of the sink. In some instances an under-sink filter may be connected directly to the cold water line on the main faucet instead. In either instance, cold water passes through a filter or series of filters before reaching the separate tap. Depending on the make of the filters, replace the filters every few months for proper filtration. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the cold water valve under the sink. If in doubt as to which valve is hot and which is cold, turn both to the off position. If you can not locate a valve in near proximity the sink, turn off the main water shut off valve in the basement or outside the home.

    • 2

Press down on the filtered water tap faucet to drain excess water from the cold water line.

    • 3

Open the counter cabinet door and locate the filter system, which is usually connected to a side wall inside the cabinet. Depending on which type of filtration system is installed there may be one, two or three long tubes, each containing a filter. If the system is a "stage" system, each filter is slightly different and is labeled as such to filter different contaminants.

    • 4

Grasp one tube at a time and gently twist until the tube cover slides off, revealing the filter underneath.

    • 5

Gently twist on the filter to remove it. If it does not twist off, attempt to pull it gently downward until it comes free. Install a replacement filter. If you're using a stage system, replace with a filter that matches the "stage" number for the old filter.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for the other filters. Replace the filter covers.

    • 7

Turn the water supply valves you closed in Step 1 back on. Press the filtered water tap lever and hold it for a few seconds to begin water flow through the filters. Turn it off when water comes out of the faucet.
