CO2 Blast Cleaning
Cleaning a surface that is heavy with buildup is often a frustrating process. While many people resort to using such methods as sand blasting, or plastic bead blasting for this type of job, these methods can be extremely abrasive and can damage the surface permanently. C02 or dry ice blasting is a relatively new cleaning method that is just as effective as those that use abrasives, but without the harmful issues that come along with them. In C02 blast cleaning, pellets of dry ice are accelerated into an air stream and used to remove buildup from a surface. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Acquire an ice blasting machine. C02 blasting machines can be rather expensive, and it is not necessary to own one, unless you tend to do quite a bit of blasting work. Rather, it is best to attempt to borrow or rent a machine, either from a friend or a hardware store. Once you have acquired a blasting machine, you will need dry ice, which should be purchased as close to the time of the job as possible.

2
Prepare your workspace. If you are working inside, open any and all windows, in order to facilitate adequate ventilation. Put on safety equipment, which should include protective clothing, eyewear and gloves. If at all possible, remove excess dirt or grime from the surface you intend to blast.

3
Turn on the ice blasting machine. Take the hose and point it directly at the surface you intend to clean. Begin operating the hose, ensuring that you are hitting every inch of space on the surface. You can improve your technique by moving the hose sideways across the wall, followed by up and down.

4
Turn off the power to the ice blasting machine. Dispose of remaining dry ice, taking care not to touch the material with your bare hands. Air out the work area for at least one day.

Stubborn surfaces may need extra attention; hitting them at different angles can sometimes help to remove surface grit.
Never allow pets or children on site when using a C02 blaster.
