How to Acquire EU Citizenship
Becoming a citizen of the European Union allows for a great deal of freedom of movement. As an EU citizen you can live and work without restriction in any of the EU member states, meaning that the range of places you can live is large. EU citizenship is based upon being a citizen of a member state. If you are already a citizen of a member state your EU citizenship is automatic. You will need to become a citizen of a member state in order to become a citizen of the European Union.

1
Become a citizen of an EU member state. There is no such thing as EU citizenship without holding an EU member-state citizenship. All citizens of EU member states are EU citizens. If you are already a passport holder of an EU member state, then you are an EU citizen. Renew your passport, since all modern EU member-state passports show EU citizenship.

2
Check the rules of the country you have the strongest connection to. If you have ancestry in a given EU member state, then check the rules of this country. In Britain, for example, to gain a citizenship through ancestry, you have to either be born in the UK, or to have at least one parent who is a British citizen. Search the website of the EU member state you were born in, or your parents were from.

3
Become naturalized as a citizen of an EU member state. This will usually take a period of around five years of living in a country, as long as you do not have any criminal convictions. Although it varies from country to country, you will usually have to take a citizenship test before you can be naturalized. When you have passed this, you can apply for a passport, which will denote member-state and EU citizenship.

4
Check the laws of the country you have an ethnic or linguistic tie to. Hungary, for example, passed a law whereby all who can show a significant ethnic or linguistic tie to Hungary are eligible for passports. If you get one of the these passports, you are an EU citizen.
