How to Get Rid of Mites From a Mange Dog in the House

Mites from a mange dog can be difficult to remove from a house. Besides invading carpets and pet fur, female mites will lay more than 100 eggs in a lifetime. This fast reproduction causes an overbearing amount of mites in the house. Mites will defecate throughout the house and live off the blood of people and pets, causing mild to severe allergic reactions.

Select two or more rooms in your house. If you decide to do the entire house overnight, you will have to spend the night at a hotel or friend's house. Using borax, sprinkle the powder across all the carpets in your house. Let it sit overnight, and do not allow anyone to touch it.

Vacuum the powder up. When finished, you will dispose of the contents inside the vacuum immediately. If you have a vacuum bag, you will dispose of the contents in a sealed plastic bag in an outside trash. If you have a canister vacuum, you will empty the debris in a plastic bag and then disinfect the canister.

Clean the areas where the pet sleeps or stays. Cleanse the areas with a hospital-grade disinfectant and coat it with borax powder. Vacuum the borax powder and put all of the bedding inside the dryer for at least 30 minutes on the highest heat setting.

Wash all linens, slipcovers and blankets with bleach and borax. Place these items in the dryer everyday for at least 30 minutes on the highest heat setting.

    • 5

Use the shampooer to shampoo all the carpets and rugs. You will fill the shampooer with a strong carpet shampoo.

    • 6

Repeat this entire process every day until your dog is cured from mange. Eliminating all the mites early will help your dog recover, reduce your chances of being harmed by the mites and will make the mite-ridding process easier.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add sprigs of mint underneath your pillows and bedding to prevent mites.

  • Be careful when handling borax and bleach. These are chemicals that can cause eye, breathing and skin reactions.
