How to Save As a DVR MS
DVR-MS, or Microsoft Digital Video Recording, is a video file container created by Microsoft that provides the same basic functions as a DVR, such as pausing live TV. The files are used with Microsoft's Windows Media Center, which can be used as a DVR to view and capture TV shows through your computer. If you would like to save video files as DVR-MS, you must set the shows to record through Media Center.

Launch Windows Media Center on your computer, which comes preinstalled on all Windows 7 systems, by selecting the "Start" menu followed by "All Programs."

Scroll down to the "TV+Movies" section on the main screen of Media Center, and then click the "Guide" link. Scroll through the list of shows that are airing, and click on any of the listed TV shows to begin viewing that TV show.

Move the mouse on the screen once the TV show starts playing in Windows Media Center to bring up a panel of controls at the bottom right of the screen. Click the "Record" button, which is the button with the small circle at the left of the control panel, to capture the TV show. The TV show begins recording from the moment you started watching it. It automatically saves as a DVR-MS file into the "Recorded TV" folder, which can be found in the "My Documents" folder in the "My Videos" subfolder.

Set a TV show to record in advance through Windows Media Center by going to "TV+Movies" followed by "Guide." Scroll to the program that you want to record in the guide. Right-click the program name, and then choose "Record." The TV show automatically records to the "Recorded TV" folder on your hard drive as a DVR-MS when it airs.

Create a series recording if you would like the same TV show to record every time it airs. Access the guide by going to "TV+Movies" followed by "Guide." Scroll to the show in the program list, right-click the show name and choose the "Record Series" option. The TV show you selected records as a DVR-MS file and saves to the "Recorded TV" folder every time it airs.
