How to Measure Cooktops

Cooktops are electric or gas pieces of equipment used for cooking in a kitchen. They are often separate from ovens and provide more flexibility when designing a kitchen. Prior to installing or replacing a cooktop, you will need to take a few measurements to know how much cooktop space you will need on the countertop. While most cooktops are a standard size, you can have them custom-made and will need to provide accurate measurements.

1. Measure the length and width of the cooktop, taking care to measure the longest and widest parts.

2. Measure the height of the knobs and grills (gas cook tops). Note if the grill or knobs are higher on the cooktop.

3. Research your measurements to determine if you have a standard or custom-made cooktop. Most cooktops measure 30 or 36 inches wide; some companies consider the 30-inch width "standard."
