How to Prevent Oil Leaking From an Outboard Motor

Outboard motors come in several sizes and are used to power watercraft ranging from small pontoons to large fishing boats. Outboard motors that leak oil will not only sustain performance issues: the leaking oil will also contaminate the water in which the boat is used. Give your outboard motor a good once over and change any defective parts to help prevent it from leaking oil.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the fuel lines for any signs of leaking fuel, cracks or breaks. If any of these conditions is present, replace the fuel lines instead of attempting to repair them to ensure that no further oil leaks occur.

    • 2

Examine the oil tank itself for any cracks, dings or holes, which can occur when the boat comes in contact with rocks, tree branches or sustains other damage. Either replace the tank if the damage is severe, or repair it if there are only minor dings or cracks.

    • 3

Check the engine block for any areas of corrosion. These areas can lead to oil leaks and should be marked off and repaired by a professional.

    • 4

Keep the outboard engine in good condition and have it professionally tuned at least once a year to help prevent oil leaks.
