How to Play the School Band Drums
Taking part in extracurricular activities allows you to have interests and friends outside your school lessons. Playing the drums in your school band, improves your coordination skills, gives you confidence to perform for others and looks good on your resume. Also, some school bands get to travel to different cities and countries to play events.

1
Learn a basic beat. Ask a friend or teacher who knows how to play the drums to show you a simple beat. Try and memorize the pattern and pay attention to the interaction between that person's hands and feet. Practice the beat until you can do it without help. This gives you an indication if drumming is for you.

2
Learn how to read music. Look online for tutorials for reading drum music. Print the worksheets and practice correlating the notes to the associated music. Count the time between the drum beats out loud. This helps you to understand how the drum notation relates to the music.

Get music lessons. Approach your school music teacher and explain that you want to play in your school band. Commit to a series of regular lessons, such as two lessons a week for three months. Ask the teacher to give you homework at the end of each lesson so you can keep practicing.

4
Audition for the band. Most bands have an audition every term or year for a drummer. Typically, you have to show you can play a variety of tunes and read drum music. Drums are a popular instrument --- do not be disheartened if you do not make the band first time. Ask whether you can still go to practices to improve your skills.
