How to Recover a Dead WiiKey

The WiiKey is a chip that you install inside your Nintendo Wii, giving you access to homebrew games (free, community-developed games) and games imported from other regions. Occasionally, an update will damage your WiiKey, making it impossible for you to access games in your Nintendo Wii System. Luckily, you can recover your WiiKey in most cases without having to open your Nintendo Wii to remove it.

Instructions

    • 1

Register and download the "Config Disc Images 1.9s" from the official WiiKey website (see Resources).

    • 2

Open the downloaded file, and extract the file onto your desktop. Click on the downloaded file to open it, and drag the file inside labeled "cfg.1.9s.us.iso" onto your desktop.

    • 3

Burn the extracted file, using your favorite ISO burning program. Most computers have a burning program installed by default. Double-click the "cfg.1.9s.us.iso" file, and follow the onscreen prompts to burn the file onto a DVD-R.

    • 4

Insert the burned DVD-R into your Nintendo Wii, and turn off the system.

    • 5

Turn on the Wii again, and follow the onscreen instructions to recover and update your WiiKey. Once the program is installed, remove the DVD-R disc and turn off the Wii.

    • 6

Turn on your Nintendo Wii once again, and test the system to make sure the WiiKey is working. Try to run any imported game disc or homebrew game to test the WiiKey. If the WiiKey is still not working, you will have to replace it, as it is most likely permanently corrupted.
