Unscrew and remove the screws that anchor the door knob rose, which is the circular metal decorative plate at the base of the door knob. Slide the end of a flat screwdriver between the rose and the door. Be careful not to scratch into or damage the wood door, or the rose itself, with the screwdriver. Pry the rose loose from the door with the screwdriver.

Loosen the setscrew in the shaft of the door knob, using the screwdriver. Remove the knob. Proceed to step 4 if the knob does not have a setscrew.

Press the edge of the flat screwdriver into the slot, or indentation, in the base of the door knob. This type of knob is spring-loaded. As you press in the slot with the screwdriver, slide the door knob off the spindle underneath.
