How to Compare Cue Lathes

A cue lathe is a type of mechanical tool that is designed to shape wood into a perfect circle and turn it into a perfect pool or billiards cue. Cue lathes can also be used to fix pool cues that are old and worn. If you're in the market for a cue lathe, there are a few things that you can compare to help make sure you're buying a unit that will help and not harm the cues in your collection. Does this Spark an idea?

    • 1

Look at the size of the unit. Some cue lathes are designed to break down and be portable, allowing you to take it with you from place to place. Other lathes do not break down or are too heavy to move, requiring you to set them up in one location and leave them in that spot for the duration of use.

    • 2

Find out exactly what your cue lathe is designed to do. Some lathes may only have specific attachments for fixing existing cues and not making new ones. Others may only make new cues and do not have the ability to fix existing ones. Others still will have the ability and attachments required to perform both of these tasks at will.

Look at the exact physical dimensions of a cue lathe. Cue lathes tend to be large, and when fully assembled can be measured at 30 inches or more. Even portable cue lathes are often 40 pounds or more in size, so if you're planning on buying a cue lathe because of its portability make sure its physical dimensions actually allow it to be portable in your specific situation.
