How to Use the Graphing Calculator in the Classroom
Using graphing calculators in class can enhance students' understanding and, if used properly, can help students develop higher level mathematical skills. Some instructors believe that calculators in the class will prevent students from developing their math skills; others believe they will grow stronger in their understanding of numbers and even take the fear out of solving mathematical problems. Teachers can always teach their students how to solve problems with a calculator and then teach them how to solve problems without the calculator. This technique allows students to use the calculator to check their answers for accuracy and builds self-confidence as they achieve correct answers.

Check with your department to ensure graphing calculators are allowed in class.

Determine the number of graphing calculators and the number of students in the classroom. If you have fewer graphing calculators than students, let the students who have their own bring them to class. If that's not sufficient, have students share calculators.

Set up a log book for students to sign out the calculators they borrowed to prevent calculators from going missing. The school might also hold the students accountable for any calculator damage. Have students sign off separately if they will be taking the calculator home.

Practice using a variety of graphing calculators before teaching so you will be able to answer any questions students may have.

Use graphing calculators for algebra, statistics, physics and calculus. Make sure that the calculator is being used for supporting the lesson and not being used as the focus of the lesson.

Carry out your lesson and leave ample time for instruction. Some students have never used a graphing calculator before and will require time to familiarize themselves with the functions.
