Following some safety rules will help ensure you and your trailer cargo will arrive safely.

If you're fortunate enough to have access to a 4x8 trailer when moving, it's a big help getting your personal belongings from one place to another. While the carrying capacity of these utility trailers is somewhat limited by their small size, you'll need to be careful to not only load it properly, but not overload it. Following proper loading procedures is key to not only make sure you don't lose any of your cargo along the way, but to ensure the trailer handles properly when it is on the road.

Instructions

    • 1

Load the trailer with the heavier items up front. At least 60 percent of the weight should be in front of the trailer's axle, which will prevent the trailer from swaying and whipping at higher speeds. A trailer with excess weight in the back can become extremely unstable at higher speeds.

    • 2

Distribute the heavier items on the left and right sides of the trailer to increase stability, especially if you are moving taller items. An uneven load can tip over when turning.

    • 3

Place a tarp over your items to protect them while in transport. If your 4x8 trailer has side rails, tucking the tarp inside the rails will be sufficient. If it is a flat 4x8 trailer, securely tuck all ends of the tarp under the items on the trailer to prevent the tarp from flapping in the wind during transport.

Secure the items on the 4x8 trailer with ratchet tie-downs in a crisscross formation. Attach the first tie-down in the front left side of the trailer and pull it across the top of the cargo and connect the other end at the rear right side of the trailer. Then click the ratchet until it is secure over the cargo. Attach the other tie-down in the front, right side of the trailer, and then pull it across the top of the cargo and connect the other end at the rear left side of the trailer. Click the ratchet until it is tightly secured over the cargo. Take a third ratchet tie-down and secure it under and over the middle of the trailer, parallel to the wheels.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not exceed the maximum load capacity on the 4x8 trailer, which can cause instability once on the road. Load capacities vary based on the specific model, so consult the owner's manual for the specific weight limit. Most 4x8 trailer capacities range from 800 to 1,200 pounds.
