Weekly planners help you and your whole family stay focused.

If you're having trouble keeping up with the many things you do as a parent, a weekly planner may be the thing you need. In fact, you can encourage your children to create their own planners, as well. You will teach them how to organize and prioritize -- skills they can use for the rest of their lives.

Things You'll Need

  • Personal Weekly Planner:
  • Spiral notebook
  • Kid's Weekly Planner:
  • Seven 6-by-6 squares of colored paper
  • Markers
  • Seven small refrigerator or doughnut magnets

Paper planners enable you to quickly access important dates and times.
Paper planners enable you to quickly access important dates and times.

Buy a spiral notebook. Create a monthly overview on one page. Write down all the important information coming up for each day. Follow that page with several other blank pages for notes and ideas.

Create a weekly overview on one page following the blank pages and notes. Write down all the important events and deadlines coming up. Use a tab on this page if this is an important week with extra special events.

    • 3

Create a daily to-do list for each day of the week on the page after the weekly overview. Use one page for each day. Write down all appointments and deadlines accordingly.

    Kid's Weekly Planner

    • 4

Cut seven squares, for the seven days of the week, using the colored paper. Write each day of the week on the seven squares. Line up the squares, starting with Sunday, on the refrigerator using magnets. Make sure your child can reach the squares.

    • 5

Ask your child what events are important enough to write down. If special activities are taking place, have him draw them on Post-it notes. For example, if soccer practice is taking place that week, he can draw a soccer ball for the date and time it happens.

    • 6

Refer to the planner as the days of the week go by. This also gives you an opportunity to go over the days and names of the week. At the end of the week, remove the Post-it notes and start over again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider using paper planners over electronic or computer-based planners. They offer the quickest access to your most important information.

  • When special events or dates are coming up, make a second planner and put both weeks up. This gives your child something to look forward to.
