How to Repair the Tailgate Lock on a 1998 Ford Explorer

Repairing the tailgate lock on your 1988 Ford Explorer requires the removal of the tailgate cover plate in order to access the lock. Once removed, you can pry out the locking mechanism and replace the broken component to continue using your tailgate latch. The tailgate lock components are inexpensive, so it is often better to simply replace the broken component, as it is cheaper and will take you less time.

Things You'll Need

• Phillips screwdriver
• Flat-head screwdriver

Instructions

1. Park your Explorer and turn off the engine.

2. Open the tailgate. Remove the covering panel on the center of the tailgate by detaching its four screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull off the covering panel.

3. Remove the four screws securing the tailgate lock mechanism, using a Phillips screwdriver. Pry out the mechanism with a flat-head screwdriver.

4. Remove the lock component by pulling it off the mechanism. Install a new lock component. Reattach the mechanism to the tailgate and secure it by reinstalling the four screws. Reattach the covering panel and reinstall the four screws. Close the Explorer's tailgate.
