How to Teach Science Online
Teaching science is challenging in the best of places. Teaching science over the Internet, however, requires an extra level of work. Excellent planning, attention to detail, innovative lesson plans and frequent feedback are key parts of a successful online science class.

1
Plan the lecture part of the science class. Build in extra time for students to read and study. Reading comprehension drops by nearly one-third when it's done online, and reading speed is decreased nearly as much.
-
2
Check all links provided to students. The Internet is a dynamic medium, and studies or lessons that were available one semester might not be there for another term. When possible, copy relevant material to a school computer to make sure it's available.
-
-
3
Design experiments that can be done at home, either using common household items or laboratory kits designed for specific experiments. Consider looking for laboratories at other schools that might be available for students taking online classes.
-
4
Ask for frequent feedback. Make adjustments to pace and content. Online classes pose inherent obstacles to determining the extent of student engagement. Include online assistance for your students in the form of e-mail lists, discussion forums and frequently asked questions sections.
