How to Paint Concrete Brick Walls

Tips for painting concrete brick walls.

The most important step in painting a concrete brick wall is cleaning the surface of the concrete bricks properly before you apply the paint. Unless you clean the wall properly, the paint will not adhere to the wall and will become very difficult to maintain. However, if you clean the wall thoroughly before you start your painting project, you will find that painting a concrete brick wall is similar to painting any other kind of wall.

Things You'll Need

• Tri-sodium phosphate solution
• Latex gloves
• Eye protection
• 2 1-inch nap paint rollers
• Primer
• Paint

Instructions

1. Clean the concrete brick wall with a tri-sodium phosphate, or TSP, solution. This removes dirt and any efflorescence deposits from the wall. Use rubber gloves and eye protection when working with this solution.

2. Rinse the area thoroughly after applying the TSP solution.

3. Apply a latex primer made specifically for masonry walls to your concrete brick wall. Use a 1-inch nap roller to apply this primer.

4. Paint the concrete brick wall with a latex paint using another clean, 1-inch nap roller. Then use a paintbrush to paint hard-to-reach areas on the concrete brick wall. Let dry, and add another coat if needed.
