How to Paint Pattern Packets for Charger Plates
Pattern packets are basically designs that come already made for you. They usually include the original design template and a few colored ones depending on what type you choose. You can get some with adhesive already on the back, ready to glue to your charger or you can add them with adhesive. No matter what type of pattern packet you choose, it will certainly add a custom look to your chargers, and finish off your dining space with a bit of "wow factor." Be sure to make these well in advance, before a special event or dinner party you may be hosting.

1
Order your pattern packets online or find some at your local craft store if they have them. Be sure to get a few extra pattern pieces just in case if you rip one or make a mistake. Determine how many chargers you will be needing and buy your paint accordingly. Keep in mind you will be painting your patterns, so find some that are plain, or without color.

2
Set up your workspace and cover it with newsprint. Lay out all of your chargers. Do one at a time. Add a light amount of adhesive to the back of a pattern piece, or follow the instructions if the glue comes with the pattern. Lay the pattern down slowly onto the plate exactly where you want it. Smooth it out. Immediately wipe off any glue that may have oozed. Allow your pattern to dry. Do this for all of your plates.

Return to your workspace and set up your paints. Some pattern packets may even provide you with some ideas of how to paint the design. You can get other design ideas from anywhere: the craft store, magazines and the Internet. Mix colors that will complement your dining room and look good with the other dishes. You can use blending if you are a good artist or simply fill in the color for a clean and simple design.

4
Mix your first color and keep a detailed record of how much of each color you used to create it. Jot down notes on your packet instructions. Mix as much of this color as you think you will need to cover all of your chargers. For example, if you have a yellow flower design, make enough yellow for all of the flowers on all of the chargers. This way you are guaranteed to have a uniform color. If you have time, progress to another color. If not, allow the first color to dry and return for the next color segment. Repeat until all of your plates are painted in the same way with the same colors. You can add variation if you wish, but use a few of the same colors to anchor your design and give it cohesion.

Once your paint has dried, and you have finished any necessary touch-ups, add the ceramic glaze. This protects the design, smooths out the edges of the pattern and makes it a part of the plate. You may need a couple of coats -- just use your judgement depending on what looks best. The glaze will also add a bit of shine.

Tips & Warnings
It is always best to have extra supplies so you can do touch-ups later. There is always a good possibility you will need to add a new plate in case your family expands, or unexpected guests arrive with family. Keep in mind that family is unpredictable, so keep a few extra plates on hand. If you get tons of compliments keep a few handy for gifts.
This is not an ideal craft to do around children -- they will want to help and paint. It is best not to involve them if you want your final product to look professional. Encourage them to paint with washable paints and give them a cheap dollar store plate to make their very own.
Do not put these chargers in the dishwasher. Use mild dish soap and water to clean them and pat them dry with a dish towel.
