How to Save Polar Bears From Going Extinct

How to Save Polar Bears From Going Extinct thumbnail
Incorporate energy-saving measures to save polar bears from extinction.

Polar bears inhabit the North Pole's Arctic region and are dependent on ice packs for survival. Global warming, or climate change, has reduced the amount of sea ice in the region. Ice forms an integral part of the polar bears habitat, where it lives, hunts, breeds and even prepares maternal dens. Melting Arctic ice poses a grave threat to the survival of the polar bear. While several organizations are making concerted efforts to save the polar bear, you too can take proactive measures to save this animal from extinction.

Instructions

    • 1

Discourage the commercial trade in polar bears, by refusing to purchase products made from polar bear hide and other parts such as rugs and trophies. Assert your solidarity for polar bears by joining organizations that oppose commercial trading in polar bears, including Humane Society International, Defenders of Wildlife, and the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

    • 2

Join the "Adopt A Polar Bear" program of organizations like WWF (World Wildlife Fund) and Defenders of Wildlife. Adoption kits include a variety of gift item options, the proceeds of which support efforts to save the polar bear.

    • 3

Reduce your carbon footprint by only purchasing products that are produced locally. Do not buy products that are not local, as transporting consumer products consumes energy and contributes to global warming and melting Arctic ice.

    • 4

Incorporate energy-saving measures at home and work, and educate family, friends and colleagues to do the same. Use energy-efficient light bulbs, avoid battery-operated devices, and conserve resources like water, electricity and fuel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Distribute literature from polar bear conservation organizations to family and friends, to increase awareness of the need to save this animal.

  • The high temperatures that contribute to melting sea ice, prevent polar bears from hunting seals and building fat reserves -- resulting in starvation and death.
