How to Fix a Rattle From the Exhaust on My 1999 Jeep Wrangler
Rattles within an exhaust system can usually be fixed simply by inspecting the system, finding the culprit and fixing the component responsible for the rattle. Rattles in the exhaust system are generally due to the wear of three main components; the heat shield, exhaust hangers or rubber exhaust mounts. All three of these components can be replaced without removing the entire exhaust system. Most novice mechanics can swap the components out without taking the vehicle to a professional mechanic or service center.

Insert a new hanger into the insulator. If the insulator is worn or damaged, pivot the hanger out of the insulator and pull the insulator from the body. Insert a new insulator into the body and connect the hanger.

Inspect the heat shield. On four-cylinder models, the heat shield has a top cover and bottom cover that may come apart and cause. If he heat shield is rattling, remove the hanger and then remove the upper and lower portion of the heat shield. Bend the flanges on the shield back to their original positions using a hammer. Place the pieces of the heat shield into their original position and insert the hangers into the insulators to hold the shield in place.
