How to Make Data Tables for a Science Fair Project

How to Make Data Tables for a Science Fair Project thumbnail
Record your results in a data table.

Making data tables and recording observations and other information is a practice employed by students and scientists alike. If your data table was an essay, it would be the body paragraph. Each cell of your data table can include diagrams, written results and any other relevant information pertaining to the project. By constructing a data table with a straight edge and writing utensil, you can create an effective tool for qualitative and statistical analysis.

Things You'll Need

  • Straight-edge (ruler, yard stick, etc)
  • Writing utensil (permanent marker, pen, pencil, etc)

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a data table with grids using a straight edge ruler. Leave room in each cell of the table for information such as data, descriptions and photographs, if necessary. Plan which data fields you will need to create a column for before you begin sketching. For example, if you have six data fields, you should plan to draw six columns.

    • 2

Label the titles of each column with dependent and independent variables, age ranges, study groups or any other relevant labels. Make the titles' lettering more bold so it will stand out from the data.

    • 3

Input your data into the data table. Draw diagrams, cut and paste pictures, write test results or anything else that contributes to your science fair project experiment.

Tips & Warnings

  • Titles should be concise and describe the data in the column beneath.
